I think it is official – I am in a dating slump. It has literally been months since I have had any sort of hope for a relationship. And naturally, the one guy I was interested in, has not contacted me 0ther than to tell me he’d get in touch when work got less busy. Awesome. I’ll be here… Holding my breath.
So without any positive dating stories, what the hell do I write about when I have a dating blog?! Then it hit me. You know what I am good at? What I am really good at is finding opportunities to make out. This, I am an expert at. And how do I find myself with so many make out opportunities? Well the secret is this – you have to know the qualities of an ideal make out buddy. When out in the wild, you should be able to quickly identify that special someone who has the potential to become a repeat offender and act accordingly. These make out buddies are gold because you can be single as can be, without having to accept a kiss-less life.
So what makes a good make out buddy? Here are 11 traits to help you spot one in the wild.
1. A make out buddy is someone you are attracted to - Let’s be real, if you aren’t trying to have a relationship with this person, then all those other requirements (honest, nice, smart, confident) don’t really matter. What does matter? You have to want to make out with them! No sense in kissing someone repeatedly who makes you gag.
2. A make out buddy is someone you don’t want to date - If you want to date this guy, do not make out with him. Very, extremely, rarely do make out friends become anything more than friends and it is best to assume you are the rule – not the exception. Plus we have already established that no strings attached doesn’t really exist when you are kissing someone you could see your self dating. So if that is what you are hoping for from your make out buddy, you are probably going to get your heart crushed when that doesn’t happen.
3. A make out buddy is single - Le duh. Don’t try to make a guy in a relationship your make out buddy. Not because it won’t work, but because you’ll probably end up feeling like shit.
4. A make out buddy is available - If this dude is always busy, he has no time to invest in kissing. Kissing takes time.
5. A make out buddy knows his role – He should be both clear and respectful with the rules, whatever those may be. According to Urban Dictionary a make out buddy is very different than friends with benefits. It is just about good, old fashioned kissing. This holds true for me, and any make out buddy who tries to go all PG-13 is going to get the boot fast.
6. A make out buddy is healthy - Strepp sucks. Having an allergic reaction to the penicillin they gave you sucks more. No matter how attractive you think this guy is, it isn’t worth a week of pain if he isn’t in perfect health.
7. A make out buddy thinks your hot - You are not going to be able to squeeze a month of making out out of some guy who only thinks you are OK. Don’t worry, it is usually very easy to tell the difference.
8. A make out buddy is not someone who is in love with you – If you have already determined that this person is not someone you want to date, then make darn sure they feel the same. No sense in hurting hearts.
9. A make out buddy is someone who likes cuddling - The best type of make out friends are the ones who spend the night and cuddle. Then you get to have a boyfriend for the night without any messy relationship drama. Just make sure he is on board with # 5. Some make out buddies pretend they are good with cuddling but it is only because they think they can get away with more.
10. A make out buddy lives in close proximity or has transportation – D has recently been removed from my short list of make out friends bc A. he lives in Encinitas (a whole 25 mins away) and B. he just informed me that he has “gotten in a little trouble” and can no longer drive. A make out buddy that is going to require you to go to them is not a keeper.
11. A make out buddy is someone you have regular access too - You don’t want to have to depend on calling or have to hope you run into him. Instead, the perfect make out buddy is a friend of a friend, or someone on, say, your kickball team. Knowing you’ll see them on a regular basis means you don’t have to stress about strategic contact.
In short, will make out buddies solve the world’s problems? No. But they are an excellent answer to loneliness and provide hours of entertainment. If you are single and haven’t looked into getting one yet, I recommend doing so immediately. I can only hope that this list will help you identify the ideal candidate.
